Carme Gallego (IBMB-CSIC) in collaboration with Mar Fatjó-Vilas (FIDMAG) will receive funding from the 30^th edition of La Marató TV3 dedicated to Mental Health. The project is titled Targeting mRNAs condensates in neurites for a better understanding of synaptic plasticity dysfunction in schizophrenia. The main goal of this project is to advance into the identification of molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, as an essential step in identifying prediction markers and developing new treatments. The project capitalizes on the importance of the localization of mRNAs at synapses and local protein synthesis in neurite outgrowth and synaptic plasticity, which is intimately related to mRNA transport along dendrites as large mRNA condensates. Understanding the principles of mRNA condensations is a key issue in determining how these aggregates shape synaptic responses.
