Lab presentation

Dr. Liesa did his PhD at the University of Barcelona under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Zorzano, on the role and regulation of mitochondrial dynamics in muscle. In 2009, Dr. Liesa was awarded a fellowship from Fundación Ramon Areces to perform his post-doctoral research at Boston University.

In 2013, Dr. Liesa became a junior group leader at Boston University and in 2015 was recruited by the Department of Medicine and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA as an Assistant Professor to lead his lab in the new Metabolism Theme and promoted to Associate Professor.

Dr. Liesa recently moved to Barcelona to accept a tenured position as a Group Leader (Científico Titular) at the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC), located at the Barcelona Science Park.

Projects

The projects in the laboratory aim to define the mechanisms by which mitochondria adapt or maladapt to metabolic diseases, focusing in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

More specifically, the laboratory of Dr. Liesa-Roig is interested in molecular mechanisms determining mitochondrial redox and heterogenity, with the long term goal of identifying those that have potential to become a therapeutic target.

In addition, the laboratory works in collaboration with industry and other academic laboratories to develop methods and protocols to quantify mitochondrial function, redox and dynamics.
