Ettore De Giorgio won the 3rd prize in the 2020 SEBD photography contest. De Giorgio is a PhD student in the Mechanisms of morphogenesis and organogenesis lab (Marta Llimargas). They study the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying tubular organ morphogenesis.
The images in the contest are representative of the field of developmental biology and captured through the media expected to exist in a scientific laboratory setting.

Confocal image of a Drosophila tracheal tree at the end of embryogenesis overexpressing the genetic program required for chitin accumulation. Tracheal cells overexpress the chitin synthase protein Kkv (green) and the Expansion protein (blue), required for chitin deposition. The lumen accumulates high levels of chitin (red).
